How catfish check works:

How 30-second catfish check can help you save time and money

A catfish check doesn't accuse anyone. It tells you whose face is in the photo, and that is usually the fastest way to stop wondering.

Lost to scams that started on social media

Nearly 30% of people who reported losing money to a scam in 2025 said it started on social media, most often on Facebook, WhatsApp or Instagram.

How to spot a catfish with a reverse image search

A catfish uses someone else's photos or an invented identity. Five steps tell you which one you are dealing with, each with an example from the stories above.

  1. Save the clearest photo

Pick the picture that shows the face best: front-facing, no sunglasses, no heavy filter. Crop it so the face fills most of the image.

ExampleMatt's first photo is a group shot on a cliff. His third is a close-up selfie. Use the third one.
  2. Run a catfish image search

Upload the photo to face2social. It compares the face, not the file, so it can find their profiles even when those profiles use different pictures. A regular reverse image search only finds copies of the same image.

ExampleThe photo Matt sent isn't on his Instagram, but his face is. Face search still finds his account.
  3. Compare the names

Look at the names on the profiles you find. A nickname or a different username is normal. Another person's name on every match is the clearest catfish sign.

Example"Lexi" and "Alexandra" are the same person. "Daniel" and "Lucas Prado" are not.
  4. Check the story

Compare the job, the city and the age with what the profiles show. Small gaps happen. A whole different life is a red flag.

Example"Surgeon on a mission abroad" in the chat, fitness coach in Miami everywhere else.
  5. Confirm on a short video call

A two-minute video call settles most doubts. Real people usually agree. Catfish find reasons not to, and often ask for money instead.

Example"Can't video call from the base", followed by a request for $800.

Face2social vs reverse image search and Social Catfish

A reverse image search such as Google Lens or TinEye looks for copies of the same picture, so a catfish who uses a cropped or less-known photo can slip through. People-search sites such as Social Catfish search by name, email, phone, username or image across their own records. Face2social does one thing: it matches the face in your photo to social media profiles, even when those profiles use different pictures.

Real or catfish: what a check tells you

Looks real

Same name and story everywhere

Their name, job and city match across profiles, and the accounts have history. Good sign.

Looks real

A nickname or a different username

"Lexi" in the chat, "Alexandra" on LinkedIn. Normal, not a catfish sign.

Ask for a video call

No matches or one new profile

Many real people keep their accounts private. A short video call answers the question.

Likely catfish

Same face, someone else's name

The photos belong to another person. If they also ask for money, stop and report the profile.

What we can and can't find

What Face2social can find

We may still find the person even if:

  • Their social profiles use different photos
  • You upload a screenshot from an app or a chat
  • Your image has been cropped
  • A light filter has been applied
  • The photos were taken years apart

Clear photos with visible facial features give more to compare.

What Face2social can't find

A guaranteed match for every person
Some people have no public profiles. No match doesn't mean someone is a catfish.
100% certain identification
Results are possible matches, not proof of identity. Confidence indicators help you, but it's up to you to decide.
Searches prohibited under our Terms
The service is unavailable in certain jurisdictions because of privacy and biometric-data regulations. See Terms and Conditions of Use

Frequently asked questions

What is catfishing?

Catfishing is using another person's photos or an invented identity to talk to someone online. A catfish usually builds trust over weeks, avoids video calls and later asks for money or gift cards.

How do I know if I'm being catfished?

Run a catfish image search on one of their photos and compare what comes back with what they told you. The clearest sign is photos that belong to someone with a different name. Add to that a story that doesn't match their profiles, excuses to avoid video calls and any request for money.

Is this catfish image search free?

Yes, the preview is free. Upload a photo and see whether possible matches were found before paying. Payment is only required to reveal full names and profile links.

How do I do a reverse image search on a profile photo?

Take a screenshot of the clearest face photo, crop it so the face fills most of the frame and upload it here. It works the same whether the photo came from a dating app, a message or a social profile.

Is face2social a Social Catfish alternative?

For checking someone by photo, yes. Social Catfish is a people-search service that searches by name, email, phone, username or image. Face2social does one thing: it matches a face to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and X profiles, with a free preview before you pay.

What if the search finds nothing?

No match doesn't prove someone is a catfish, and it doesn't prove they are real either. Many people keep their profiles private or don't use social media. Ask for a short video call.

Can I use a screenshot?

Yes. Crop the screenshot so the face is clear and large. Remove app buttons and text when you can without cutting into the face.

Will I get updates if new matches appear later?

Yes. If Face2social finds new matches for a photo you uploaded, it sends an email to the address on your account.

Is it legal to search someone by photo?

It depends on your location and how you use the service. Privacy, consent, biometric-data and image-use laws vary by jurisdiction. Users must comply with applicable laws, regulations and the Face2social Terms of Use.

How accurate is face search?

It depends on the photo and the available data. Clear images with visible facial features provide more data for comparison. Every result is a possible match rather than guaranteed identification.
